The goals of the Apollo Program included:

Establishing the technology to meet other national interests in space.

Achieving preeminence in space for the United States.

Carrying out a program of scientific exploration of the Moon.

Developing man's capability to work in the lunar environment.

What was supposed to be a pre-flight test for the first crewed flight of Apollo (scheduled for launch on February 21) turned into tragedy when a fire broke out in the command module. All three astronauts were killed.
Apollo IV November 9, 1967 unmanned The first flight of the Apollo-Saturn vehicle since the Apollo I tragedy.
