| Akihito Emperor of Japan Born in Tokyo on December 23, 1933, the fifth child and first son of Emperor Hirohito and Empress Nagako. Married commoner
Michiko Shoda in a Shinto ceremony in Tokyo on April 10,
1959. Michiko became the first commoner in Japanese
history to be chosen as a future Empress. Became Emperor of Japan upon the death of his father on January 7, 1989. Was formally crowned on November 12, 1990. SEE ALSO |
