1872 The cargo ship Mary Celeste set sail from New York City, New York, bound for Genoa, Italy. 1874 An elephant was used as a symbol for the Republican Party in an editorial cartoon by Thomas Nast. 1885 The last spike was driven in the Canadian Pacific Railway. 1907 Delta Sigma Pi was founded at New York University. 1910 The first air freight shipment (from Dayton, Ohio, to Columbus, Ohio) was undertaken by the Wright Brothers and department store owner Max Moorehouse.
