The mystery surrounding the origins of the Minoan civilization was partially solved when Dr. Cyrus Gordon of Brandeis University announced that he had deciphered the Minoan Script, known as Linear A. In the picture below he is seen explaining how he determined that LinearA was a Semitic language by comparing it with Hebrew and Eteocretan, a later Cretan script which used the Greek alphabet. By extension, he therefore proposed that the Minoan civilization was founded by traders from the region around Phoenicia on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean.
