In 1868, C. N. James erected a log structure at the confluence of the Walnut and Whitewater Rivers. He named the settlement that grew up around the house-general store-trading post after his wife, Augusta. The first train rolled into Augusta in 1881, to support the growth of livestock production and increased agriculture throughout the area, and by the turn of the century the city was being served by both the Santa Fe and the Frisco railroads. The discovery of oil and natural gas in the area led to further growth, and the oil industry played a significant economic role in the city into the early 1980's.

The first structure in Augusta is now part of the Augusta Historical Museum.
